BLOCK BY BLOCK is the companion publication to the Municipal Art Society’s exhibition JANE JACOBS AND THE FUTURE OF NEW YORK, which is sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation. Jane Jacobs’s ideas are central to the Municipal Art Society’s mission and values—most especially her insistence that urban planning must involve and empower as many citizens as possible, and in ways that are not cursory. Here, we have asked an array of writers from a wide range of backgrounds to use Jacobs’s life and ideas as a springboard for thinking about the city today, as well as the city to come. What does Jane Jacobs have to teach us today, and where might we go next with her implicit guidance? We hope that these varied approaches will provoke thoughtful, engaged discussion of what we want and what is best for all of us. Our many challenges are diverse but have common threads— Jane Jacobs was ahead of her time in appreciating the holistic nature of cities, economies, and societies. In turning to Jane Jacobs and her counsel of careful observation and engaged action, we take up with a seasoned, sensitive, and flexible guide to an uncertain future. We could not ask for better. |
